Aiòn#oo1: from performance to DCP_edition

Since the first national premiere at TimeZones Festival in Bari, Aiòn#oo1 has received a remarkably positive feedback both by the critics and the public. The extraordinary atmosphere that the performance succeeds to create pushes every time the audience to a border-area between music and images. Aiòn#oo1 induces a perception that leads to the extreme limits of a multi-sensorial synesthetic process.

"... the evening starts with the rather valuable results obtained by the artist _mar.core (aka Marco Rocca) with his performance Aiòn#oo1. The composer has succeeded in the intent to warm up the heart of the public reinterpreting the cinema of the Swedish master with absolute and sensitive ability, reaching moments of intense emotional and musical sincerity. The abstract of the project is a refined research, based on the administration of binaural beat frequencies that, imperceptibly through time-/rhythm allow the brain to reconstruct a subjective perception of the sound. The effect, on me and on the auditory yesterday, was that of a personal and psychedelic journey in a suspended atmosphere, absorbed and oblivious of anything else. (Bari Live.it - Mario Bucci)

Thanks to the collaboration and the share of institutional and cultural organizations (among which: Embassy of Sweden, Nordic Council of Minister, Uksus, ICC, Region Sardinia, Embassy of Italy), the performance Aiòn#oo1, during two following tours (2oo6-2oo7 and 2oo7-2oo8) touched many European capitals in the occasion of music and cinema festivals, and in festivals dedicated to the research on digital art. From the retrospective Sievietes Ingmara Bergmana filmas (women in the cinema of Bergman), to the festival of music and experimental cinematography Skanu Mežs Sound Forest taking place in Riga_Latvija. From the presentation at Italian Cultural Institute in Copenhagen_Denmark and in Oslo_Norway, to the Scandinavian premiere represented in Stockholm_Sweden. (scandinavian tour 2oo8)

In Stockholm, Aiòn#oo1 was presented to the institutions and to the people close to the world of Ingmar Bergman and his director of photography Sven Nykvist, to whom the work is dedicated. Among the others: Bibi Andersson, a cult actress in Bergman cinematography and, probably, the most portrayed in the work of _mar.core; Stig Bjorkman, historian and biographer of Bergman and his long time friend; Lia Boysen, dawning star of the Swedish cinema (Tales from Stockholm 2oo6); Jan Göransson, representing the mythical house of production Svensk Filmindustri and of the Swedish Film Institute; Christina Börjlind from Sveirges Television AB arts&culture department; Jan Lumholdt from Swedish national daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet; Ingrid Dahlberg from Ingmar Bergman Foundation; Marie Nyreröd director and author of a series of documentaries on the cinema and on the theatre of Bergman and on his self-isolation in the island of Fårö; Jon Asp project manager of Face to Face (official web-site of Ingmar Bergman that now includes a section dedicated to Aiòn#oo1); Hanns Rodell manager from Berwaldhallen (the philarmonic auditorium in Stockholm) and long time friend of Bergman's family. A group of students of musicology and electronic music from Stockholm University were also present, besides colleagues and friends of Bergman and Nykvist and the young nieces of Sven Nykvist.

"… I have to confess that I feel in debt. The only fact of having the occasion to show this work in the country of Ingmar Bergman and Sven Nykvist at the presence of so many people that have been in close contact with them, it's for me a great emotion. I hope to succeed in giving you in return the same emotion, inviting you to see and listen with the deepest way: forget your logical-verbal and rational part and let the aiòn time come to visit you”. With these words _mar.core shortly introduces Aiòn#oo1 in Stockholm. At the end of the performance Bibi Andersson commented: "I have to say that in the beginning I couldn't understand the reason for taking some films and reassemble them to create something completely different. But then I have been captivated by the performance: slowly, it became more and more exciting and stimulating, and in the end it seduced me. I‘m smitten with this work and I want to thank _mar.core for creating it." The Svenska Dagbladet titles: " The world of Ingmar Bergman and Sven Nykvist through the amazing and fascinating vision of an Italian". Beside, a photo that portrays _mar.core with a hand partially covering his face and Ingmar Bergman with two white angel wings.

"...The preliminary phases of the research that contributed to the realization of Aiòn, which were focused on the induction of a deep emotional flow, led me to consider that every musical composition contains a series of cultural references that somehow direct and limit it at the same time. After a first approach of subtraction and re-contextualization of the audio samples, it seemed to me that the use of the BBF (binaural beat frequencies), besides their intrinsic abilities of perceptive induction also offered the possibility to get rid of the last cultural element: the recognizability of the musical instruments. Using a similar process in editing the video that I wanted to go with the performance, I realized that the evocative strength of the images of Nykvist-Bergman was unchanged, independently from the re-contextualization process. The images, although still referable to the original context, set free from the narrative necessity acquired a deeper evocative universality..." (Svenska Dagbladet)

After Scandinavian tour 2oo8, Aiòn#oo1 has been introduced, in the only Italian date, at the Arsenale di Venezia_Spazio Thetis as a collateral event within the Biennial of Architecture. The performance’s peculiarity of creating three-dimensional "sonic sculptures" fell within the main theme of the Venetian Biennale exhibition, concerning architecture and space. In this occasion Aiòn#oo1 has been introduced and commented by Italian film critic Enrico Ghezzi. "… we forget the place and the situation, we abandon ourselves. We become the image itself. I am most thankful for a work like this because touching the intensity. There are a lot of never seen things that appear to us as if we had always known them, then this intensity intervenes, suspending the complexity of rational perception. Aiòn is absorbed in this non-formed intensity, beyond, or off the forms. The intensity of an indefinable mental state , the unbelievable intensity of many of our mental images, not least the one of ourselves as subject". (Enrico Ghezzi)

In December 2oo8 Aiòn#oo1 participated in the sixth edition of Il Vento del Cinema. This international cinema festival takes place every year since 2oo1 in the island of Procida_Napoli and is directed by Stefano Francia and Enrico Ghezzi. The theme of this edition was " the Incomplete cinema." "… the cinema has a sort of ontological incompleteness. It represents the maximum of the definition delivered to an endless mechanical non-definition. Every film never ends, but it restarts continuously, it is an eternal return: this applies to Roberto Rossellini, whose unpublished material will be introduced by the producer Jacques Grandclaude; to Ingmar Bergman, tributed from the video-musical performance of _mar.core (aka Marco Rocca), and to the works of the directors invited to this edition, the Iranian Amir Naderi and the Moldavian Artur Aristakisjan… " (La Repubblica)

"...It seems to me that the very structure of internet, with its characteristic links of hypertext connections, suggests a way of learning that has become neither sequential nor sectorial. I find interesting to see these barriers breaking down: an audience that would probably never go to a concert of "formally” defined as electronic music, accepts instead to dive into Aion#oo1without any prejudice. At the same time, I happened to talk with different people that knew little or nothing about Ingmar Bergman and that after this performance manifested an unexpected curiosity for his work..." (mar.core - Procida - the incomplete cinema)

In 2oo9 Aiòn#oo1, in its "broadcast" reduction, has been acquired by National Italian Television RAI to be transmitted in the TV programme Fuoriorario, and replicated in the next four years. In 2015 mar.core, has developed an audiovisual version of the work in standard DCP (Digital Cinema Package). This new edition of Aion#oo1(DCP24fps_scope_5.1) was drafted to allow the work to be performed without using the complex technical arrangements of the live version, infact it adapts to the standard techniques of digital cinemas: a digital projector and a sound system 5.1 dolby surround . The audio parts have been extracted from live more meaningful maintaining the format in 5.1 surround to allow the public to be able to enjoy the characteristic "three-dimensional sound" of the live Aiòn#oo1.The video parts contained in the three simultaneous projections used during live were mounted on a single screen using the large size scope of the movie format. The duration of this edition is of 47 minutes.
